Located in southeast Birmingham, Roebuck (sometimes referred to as Roebuck‑South East Lake) offers ArchWell Health members several parks and community centers within easy reach. Older Adults here enjoy green space, gentle exercise options, lifelong learning, and neighborhood-based connections.
At (8920 Roebuck Blvd), a 194‑acre city park with a two-story Don A. Hawkins Recreational Center nestled beside the Roebuck Municipal Golf Course. Though the golf course is more geared toward players, the Recreation Center offers senior-friendly activities like group fitness classes (e.g., Zumba Gold, light aerobics), table tennis, sewing clubs, and occasional health screenings—all designed for older adults.
Just a few blocks east, the Shepherd Center East at Don Hawkins (8920 Roebuck Blvd) serves adults 55+ with social engagement, nutrition services (free lunch Monday–Friday for those 60+), arts & crafts, board games, computer lessons, and seated exercise and music programs. It's a reliable community hub offering health and friendship.
For tranquil outdoor time, take a gentle walk through Huffman/Roebuck Park, about 9.5 acres of shaded playing fields and picnic areas—a peaceful green space for light strolls or seat-and-chat breaks on shaded benches.
Although East Side Park is still under construction (slated to open late 2026), it's expected to become a universally accessible green space featuring walking trails, benches, and native plantings, expanding nature access for the neighborhood.
