Live Life in Alabama
Rolling mountains in the north, white-sand Gulf beaches in the south, and more than 3,000 miles of rivers invite Alabama’s older adults to stay active, curious, and connected. The state has even declared 2025 the Year of Alabama Trails, spotlighting 25 easy-to-moderate walks—many paved or board-walked—so healthy outdoor time fits every ability level.
Start with the parks designed for comfort and accessibility. Near Birmingham, Oak Mountain State Park offers flat lakeside loops, fishing piers with benches, and an on-site Wildlife Center for low-impact wildlife viewing. Alabama State Parks In northeast Alabama, the paved Chief Ladiga Trail follows an old rail bed for 33 gentle miles—ideal for walkers, three-wheeled bikes, or mobility scooters. Alabama Travel Down on the coast, Gulf State Park’s Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail provides boardwalks over marshes and dune-lined asphalt lanes with ample rest areas. Bonus tip: Alabama State Parks grant older adults (62+) a 15 % lodging discount year-round.
Prefer a seat with a view? Step aboard Montgomery’s Harriott II Riverboat for a two-hour cruise featuring live blues and narrated history of the Alabama River—elevators and climate-controlled decks included. Bird-watchers can stroll the level Beaverdam Swamp Boardwalk at Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge, a one-mile ADA trail famous for wintering sandhill cranes. Alabama Birding Trails Paddlers who prefer calm water can float a slack-water segment of the Alabama Scenic River Trail—guides rent stable sit-on-top kayaks and arrange shuttle service.
Learning and flavor find their place, too. Birmingham’s Vecchia Cooking Classes host hands-on pizza- and pasta-making sessions, where stools, lower prep tables, and small class sizes make the experience more accessible for older adults. For mind-and-body enrichment beyond the kitchen, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at the University of Alabama curates short, no-exam courses—everything from Southern genealogy to tai chi—geared to adults 50+. Osher Lifelong Learning Institute And the Birmingham Botanical Gardens schedules weekday horticulture classes and guided garden walks that keep participants largely on paved, shaded paths.
Whether you’re gliding along a riverside boardwalk, tossing dough with a local chef, or earning a new skill in a campus classroom, Alabama serves up countless older adult-friendly ways to stay moving, learning, and flourishing—the very goals ArchWell Health champions.
