Located just west of downtown Birmingham on the site of the historic State Fairgrounds, the Five Points West area is evolving into a hub for older adults—offering community wellness events, accessible greenways, and local gathering places within easy reach of the new ArchWell Health center.
Start with nature and movement: the Valley Creek Trail extension, under construction and expected to connect Midfield all the way to CrossPlex, promises a flat, paved greenway ideal for walking, rolling, or gentle cycling. Once complete, it will stretch right past the Birmingham CrossPlex and future community spaces, offering fresh-air exercise within easy distance.
Today, the Birmingham CrossPlex, an indoor sports and aquatic facility on the former fairgrounds site, provides an accessible swimming pool and walking lanes—open to public and community groups when not hosting events. Older Adults can drop in for gentle lap walking or water-based programs depending on scheduling.
Older adults can also benefit from the Five Points West Regional Branch Library, located at 4812 Avenue W. The branch offers free public computers and Wi-Fi, book clubs, smartphone tutorials, and regular events tailored for older adults—making it a warm community hub in a quiet setting.
Residents looking for groceries or healthy meal options can visit Bama Health Foods and Marino’s Market, both longstanding community landmarks. These locally owned stores regularly host nutrition workshops and cooking demonstrations focused on healthier choices—especially welcome in food desert zones.
While the planned Family Fun Center at CrossPlex Village is expected to open in coming years, its indoor pickleball courts, bocce areas, and multipurpose green spaces are already generating excitement as future gathering spots for wellness-oriented group activity. These developments are meant to reinforce Five Points West’s emerging identity as a neighborhood built around accessible activity and renewal.
Whether you’re walking along a future trail, enjoying a pool session or library talk, or sampling healthy fare at local markets—with ArchWell Health in the heart of the area—Five Points West supports a growing, livable lifestyle for older adults aiming to stay active, informed, and connected.
ArchWell Health also provides engaging classes and activities in Five Points West designed to help you stay active, connected, and thriving.
