Most of us have heard that spending time outdoors is good for your health. Whether a walk in the woods or twenty minutes spent in a sunny spot, we often feel refreshed and healthier by spending time outside. Why is that?

The National Foundation for Cancer Research says, “Research has proven that spending time outside is associated with good health and overall wellbeing.”

One of the biggest positive impacts of outdoor activities has to do with your mental health and happiness. Feelings of anxiety and depression can lessen when you spend time in greenspaces, like parks, gardens, or wooded areas. Plus the Vitamin D exposure you get outdoors not only strengthens your bones but also boosts your mood!

Time outside can also increase your energy levels. That means going for a quick walk in your neighborhood or even eating lunch on your deck could help you finish up that project around the house. Numerous studies have shown that spending time in nature can reduce stress and blood pressure. The chance of having high blood pressure increases as you get older, and making regular visits to your ArchWell Health center to have your blood pressure checked is important. Your ArchWell Health provider may suggest low-impact exercise outdoors to help lower your blood pressure and stress levels. The good news is as little as twenty to thirty minutes in nature could lower your stress levels.

Planting a garden or flower box, birdwatching, exploring a city park, or walking with a friend are just a few ways to get outside this spring and summer. No matter what activity you choose it is important to always wear sunscreen! An SPF of 30 or higher is ideal whenever you plan to be outside. Check-in with your neighborhood ArchWell Health center to see what fun outdoor activities they have planned for members this month?
