Live Life in Greensboro

Greensboro blends garden serenity, rich history, and strong community support into a city where older adults can live well, stay connected, and enjoy purposeful activity at a comfortable pace.

Begin your day surrounded by nature at the Greensboro Arboretum, a 17-acre botanical haven featuring a variety of labeled plant collections—from rose and butterfly gardens to a wildflower trail and arboreal memorials—all connected by paved walking paths and shaded benches. Admission is free and the gardens are ideal for easy, sensory-rich strolls. Next, explore the tranquil Bog Garden at Benjamin Park, a half-mile elevated boardwalk through wetlands and native plantings with a waterfall and frequent birdlife—a peaceful setting for quiet movement or birdwatching. Nearby, the Tanger Family Bicentennial Garden offers formal floral displays, a sensory garden, a historic mill, and public art—all accessible via smooth pathways with benches near every vista.

Delve into Greensboro’s pivotal role in the Civil Rights Movement at the International Civil Rights Center & Museum, located in the original Woolworth’s lunch counter building. This museum offers engaging, self-guided or docent-led tours, accessible exhibits, senior discounts, and seating throughout. Local history comes alive at Blandwood Mansion & Gardens, where guided house tours and lush grounds offer a glimpse into the home of Governor Morehead and early Italianate architecture. ADA access is available in outdoor areas and tour routes. For contemporary art enjoyment, visit the Weatherspoon Art Museum at UNCG, which houses one of the southeast’s largest modern art collections. Older adults can participate in exhibition talks and walk through accessible galleries and the adjacent sculpture garden.

Greensboro’s Parks & Recreation department offers robust senior programming. At the Smith Active Adult Center, adults 50+ can attend low-impact classes like chair yoga, tai chi, Zumba Gold, cardio drumming, and water aerobics; there’s also a fitness center, tech lab, arts and crafts, book clubs, and social events—all affordable and welcoming to different ability levels. The city’s Greater Greensboro Senior Games encourage community through competitive walking, crafts, swimming, and SilverArts performances held annually.

Additional wellness and social engagement are available through the YMCA of Greensboro, which offers “Active Older Adults” programs—chair tap, tai chi, SilverSneakers access, group outings, and friendly interactions at community luncheons.

Whether you’re enjoying misty gardens, soaking in civil-rights history, moving gently in group classes, or sharing good conversation over local art, Greensboro offers senior-friendly experiences rooted in wellness, history, nature, and friendship.
