Primer paso:

Live Life in the Keystone State

From the rolling Laurel Highlands to the historic streets of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania’s rich history and diverse landscapes invite older adults to stay active, curious, and connected. The state’s wealth of accessible parks, world-class museums, and vibrant community programs offers countless ways to engage your mind and body, ensuring that healthy, inspiring activities fit every ability level.

Start with the gardens and parks designed for comfort and accessibility. Near Philadelphia, Jenkins Arboretum & Gardens offers docent-led golf cart tours to help visitors navigate its beautiful hillside terrain , while Tyler Arboretum provides a paved and mostly level Scenic Loop perfect for a gentle stroll. In western PA, you can get a breathtaking view without a strenuous hike at Ohiopyle State Park, where the Baughman Rock Overlook is just a short walk from a parking area. For a longer but leisurely walk, the Great Allegheny Passage offers over 150 miles of nearly flat converted rail-trail ideal for walkers or three-wheeled bikes.

Prefer a seat with a view? Take in the grandeur of the PA Wilds from the Kinzua Bridge State Park Skywalk, where a paved walkway leads to a spectacular observation deck over the valley. In the Poconos, Big Pocono State Park features a 1.4-mile paved scenic drive that circles the summit of Camelback Mountain, offering panoramic vistas from the comfort of your car. For a nostalgic journey, climb aboard the historic Strasburg Rail Road for a relaxing 45-minute steam train ride through scenic Amish countryside.

Learning and flavor find their place, too. In central Pennsylvania, Geisinger's Culinary Medicine program hosts free, hands-on classes led by a dietitian, focusing on healthy cooking skills in a relaxed setting. In Philadelphia, the Vetri Community Partnership offers a similar free cooking class for seniors, designed to support healthy lifestyles through nutritious meals. For mind-and-body enrichment beyond the kitchen, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Penn State and Temple University curate short, no-exam courses—everything from art history to wellness and technology—geared to adults 50 and over. And in Pittsburgh, the Carnegie Museums offer a Senior Membership for year-round access to four world-class institutions.

Whether you’re enjoying a vista from a mountain overlook, learning a new skill in a university classroom, or connecting with peers over a shared meal, Pennsylvania serves up countless older adult-friendly ways to stay moving, learning, and flourishing.
