Winston‑Salem, often called the “City of Arts and Innovation,” blends historic charm with welcoming greenways, active senior programming, community services, and cultural experiences that make it a great place for ArchWell Health members to stay active, social, and engaged as they age.
Across the city, the City of Winston‑Salem Recreation & Parks Department offers a range of senior‑focused activities through its community and recreation centers. Adults 50 and better can participate in seasonal classes, social events, and specialized senior games such as the Piedmont Plus Senior Games & SilverArts, which celebrates wellness with athletic challenges and arts competitions throughout the year
Local nonprofit organizations also play a vital role in senior life. Senior Services, Inc. operates helpful programs throughout Forsyth County, including the Intergenerational Center for Arts and Wellness (Generations Center) where members can join arts classes, movement workshops, group health activities, and creative wellness sessions with people of all ages. The Vital Living Program at the Shepherd’s Center of Greater Winston‑Salem offers fellowship, lifelong learning, health talks, tai chi and yoga, bridge and book clubs, and outdoor walking opportunities—all designed to support mind and body wellness for older adults.
For everyday social connection and enrichment, The Salvation Army CiVIC Senior Center provides activities ranging from chair volleyball, line dancing, and yoga to bell choir and social lunches with “Lunch and Learn” presentations on healthy living and retirement‑related topics.
Winston‑Salem’s parks, trails, and greenways offer graceful ways to spend time outdoors. Walks along Salem Creek Greenway connect several neighborhoods and provide paved, gentle paths that invite strolling, birdwatching, or connecting with neighbors. For peaceful time in nature, Reynolda Gardens—a 125‑acre botanical garden beside Reynolda House Museum of American Art—features woodlands, formal gardens, and accessible perimeter trails great for quiet exploration, seasonal color, and relaxed walking.
Cultural outings also enrich daily life. The Reynolda House Museum of American Art showcases diverse American art collections in a historic estate setting, and the city’s historic Old Salem district invites slow‑paced walking tours that blend history with local architecture. Seasonal community events like the Carolina Classic Fair bring neighbors together each fall with rides, exhibitions, and local food and music.
Whether you’re participating in gentle fitness programs, taking painting classes, exploring botanical gardens, or attending a community fair, Winston‑Salem offers ArchWell Health members countless ways to stay active, curious, and socially connected.
