Living Life Well In Independence
zh-hans-cn|
Independence, Missouri, steeped in pioneering history and proudly serving as Jackson County’s seat, offers ArchWell Health members a warm and enriching setting that bridges community, wellness, and lifelong connection. At its heart is The Palmer Center, a purpose-built senior center on Pleasant Street dedicated to enhancing the wellbeing of adults 60 and older through its Whole Person Wellness Programs built around the Seven Dimensions of Wellness model—physical, mental, social, and more.
A typical morning at the Palmer Center might begin with gentle movement in the spacious fitness room—home to Nu-Steps, treadmills, recumbent bikes, Water Rowers, and strength machines—followed by a social stroll around the full-court gymnasium, complete with a walking track that circles three pickleball courts. After working up an appetite, members can join others for a plated lunch in the Catherine J.A. Curtis Dining Hall, or step outside to relax in the center’s sunlit outdoor patio.
The Palmer Center goes beyond exercise and meals—offering game and craft rooms, a media lab with adaptive vision tools, small meeting rooms for lifelong learning groups, and a calendar packed with social events, dance programs, holiday gatherings, travel opportunities, and volunteer options. Whether you're making a new friend over a craft, learning a card game, attending a fall prevention talk, or registering for a day trip, there’s always something engaging on the agenda. Fitness memberships are affordable and include an orientation with a trainer—often free for SilverSneakers members.
Close to the center, Independence also offers delightful outdoor escapes like George Owens Nature Park, Riverside Park, and the Independence Square—ideal for gentle walks, community festivals, or friendly conversation on shaded benches. And for those aiming to stay intellectually active, the Mid-Continent Public Library’s Midwest Genealogy Center in Independence houses the largest public genealogy collection in the U.S.—an inspiring destination for exploring history and family stories.
Whether you're joining exercise classes at the center, walking tranquil park paths, attending educational programs, or connecting with a friendly community—the Palmer Center anchors a vibrant, supportive environment where older adults can remain active, curious, and connected in Independence.
